Funeral escort for Navajo Code Talker, USMC PFC Samuel F. Sandoval

Navajo Code Talker Samuel F. Sandoval USMCFARMINGTON, NM  – The family of Navajo Code Talker, USMC PFC Samuel F. Sandoval is requesting a funeral escort on Wednesday August 3, 2022.

Funeral service will be conducted for immediate family only. A public memorial will be on Saturday, August 6, 2022, location to be announced. Thank you for understanding and cooperating.

Navajo Code Talker Samuel F. Sandoval, was 98 years old. He was Zuni Clan and born for Red Cheek Clan, he was originally from Kimbeto, NM, near Chaco Canyon. After graduating from school, he enlisted into USMC on March 26, 1943 and after completing basic training he spent 20 weeks at Camp Pendleton, California, learning the Navajo code used in South Pacific Theater. He served in the Marine Corps from 1943-1946. He served in five combat tours, including Guadalcanal, Bougainville, Guam, Peleliu, and Okinawa.

In 2001, Sandoval received the Congressional Silver Medal from President George W. Bush. The 2012 documentary “Naz Bah Ei Bijei: Heart of a Warrior” chronicles Sandoval’s life story and role as a Code Talker.
