DESCRIPTION:Navajo Code Talkers Day\, Aug. 14\n\n\nEstablished through a presidential proclamation by President Ronald Reagan on August 14\, 1982. It was the anniversary of the day the Japanese surrendered to the U.S. It was not until December 2006 that the Navajo Nation created an official tribal holiday for Aug. 14 to honor and remember the Navajo Code Talkers in perpetuity. Today\, all veterans of foreign conflicts are celebrated on this day as well\, from World War II\, the Korean War\, Vietnam\, Grenada\, the Persian Gulf\, Desert Storm\, Iraqi Freedom and Afghanistan.

From 1972 to 1974\, he continued serving in the Naval Reserve ManPower Center\, Bainbridge\, Maryland. \nSeaman Taliman received the National Defense Service Medal\, The Vietnam Service Medal and The Vietnam Campaign Medal. After leaving the Navy\, he enrolled in a Trade School\, in Oklahoma\, to become a carpenter. He then worked for the Navajo Tribe Water and Sanitation Department and then the Parks and Recreation Department\nin which he retired. \nPeterson Taliman\,73 was Ta’chi’nii born for Tse’ji’kinii\, was from Navajo Station born August 25\, 1947. His date of death was on August 4\, 2021. He is preceded in death by his Father Isaac Taliman\, his Mother Mary R. Brown and Sisters Marilyn Taliman\, Donna Shirley\, Garnet Smith\, Alberta Yazzie\, Lois Todachenie\, and brothers Freddy and Cato Taliman. He is survived by Sisters Mary Ann Arnold\, Rena and Marie Taliman. \nOn behalf of the Navajo Hopi Honor Riders\, we send our condolences and prayers to the family of US Navy E-3 Peterson Talima. Enlisted from December 14\, 1967 to December 09\, 1970. He was in the reserve until December 13\, 1973\, then honorable discharged. He was trained as an Engineer Powertrain Specialist. He served Domestic\, Sea and Active Duty in Vietnam. He served as Navajo Nation Council Delegate for Teesto/Dilkon Chapter from 1983 to 1987. As a Council Delegate he defended his constituents of Teesto/Dilkon areas. He continued to protect\, defend and represent all veterans of previous wars\, present enlisted service of men and women and Gold Star Mothers. He volunteered his service as elected Commander of Blue Gap Veterans Organization. One of many examples of his dedication to his people and to the veterans was when the Navajo Nation started to experience the COVID-19 pandemic. He and the Vice Commander Eddie Yazzie and Many Farms Secretary/Treasurer\, Jacqueline Begaye started to gather supplies; water\, food\, PPE and deliver to veterans and people of the Blue Gap area. In spite of his illness he volunteered and also served as president of Chinle Valley School for disabled individuals. He was very active in Gourd Dancing. Joyce of Klagetoh died in the line of duty in Afghanistan\, according to his uncle Emerson George of Waterflow\, N.M. \nLance Cpl. Joyce\, 19\, was declared Missing in Action on June 25. He was a member of the USMC\, 3rd Marine Regiment\, 3rd Marine Division. \n“After 10 days of being listed as MIA\, we received the final notice\,” George said today. “The family right now is in the process of making all necessary funeral arrangements through Tse Bonito Mortuary.” \nGeorge said Lance Cpl. Joyce was identified by fingerprints by the Marine Casualty Headquarters of Dover\, Del. He said the unfortunate delay in informing the family was necessitated by the length of time it took to find him and the identification process afterward. \n“The family would like to thank everybody for their support and for expressing their condolences\,” George said. “We waited this long to make a press release due to the unconfirmed reports\, and we had to make sure that it was him. We hope that this does not occur in the future to other Navajo families. \n“All other media statements or articles that were put forth were done without our consent\,” George continued. “The media should respect the family’s request pertaining to news being disseminated before the family is informed. The family is owed an apology for news articles that contained erroneous information and information that the family was not yet even informed of.” \nOn Thursday\, Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley\, Jr.\, proclaimed that all flags on the Navajo Nation be flown at half-staff from July 7 to July 15 in honor of U.S. Army Corporal Lyle Jim Cambridge\, 23\, who lost his life in Iraq on July 5 and Lance Cpl. Joyce. \nThe proclamation says that the Navajo Nation honors all soldiers and veterans for their courage\, service and commitment on the frontlines of war\, and for their willingness to give their lives so that there will be freedom in the land and that the DinŽ way of life will be protected. \nGeorge said Lance Cpl. Joyce’s funeral was tentatively set for Monday\, July 10. Information regarding precise time and location may be obtained through the Tse Bonito Mortuary. Burial will at the Fort Defiance Veteran’s Cemetery with full military honors. \nLance Cpl. Joyce is survived by his mother Effelita George\, an older brother\, Nathan\, a younger sister\, Michelle\, and his maternal grandparents\, Dan and Bessie George of Klagetoh. \nGeorge described his nephew as a generous\, caring\, concerned and patriotic young man of the highest caliber. \n“He told his mother and family the main reason why he went into the military is that he didn’t like to see fathers and the mothers go to war\,” George said. “He told them that he would readily take their place to serve his country\, that they might not have to.” \n“He was greatly loved by all the numerous aunts and uncles and their siblings\,” he added. “His mother endured tremendous grief through this ordeal as well as the other family members\, relatives and community.” \nFamily friend Chaplain Irene Brodersen of the Maricopa Integrated Health Services described Kevin as a spiritually devoted young man. \n“Kevin proudly served his God\, his nation and his country as an United States Marine with the highest integrity and dignity\,” she said. \nArizona State Sen. He had received National Defense Service Medal\, Sea \nService Deployment Ribbon\, Good Conduct Medal Letter of Appreciation\, and Rifle Expert Badge (2nd Award) and served overseas in Okinawa\, Japan\, and transferred back to United States\, Camp Pendleton\, California where he finished out his last year. \nOwen received his undergraduate degree in Computer Software Engineering with Arizona State University\, and he also completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Digital Communication and Media/Multimedia with Pennsylvania State University. Through Online classes\, he was also able to receive his Masters Degree in Computer Science from John’s Hopkins University. By Spring 2021\, he would have completed his PhD from Concordia University Chicago. Owen provided Civil Engineering and \nArchitecture services\, and surveyed development projects in Arizona and Utah. After he was injured in 2007 and could no longer continue work as a civil engineer\, Owen decided to help youths with their dreams with positive externalities\, as well as hosting and mentoring them. He also created jobs for folks that needed an extra push. Above all\, he offered help in every way he could by staying in touch until they met their goals. \nOwen was a man that spoke with authority; he was faithful\, intelligent\, loved to watch sports and followed political news. He enjoyed time with his family\, was an avid reader\, and enjoyed helping others. He valued and believed in the word of God and he always sleeked the truth. He will be greatly missed\, especially his many hours of stories and lessons. He continued to reach out to youths despite medical issues. Owen passed on January 11\, 2021 due to COVID-19. Say a prayer for all our Navajo Native American soldiers who are in Iraq fighting\,” Chee said. \nAccording to Chee\, Gonzalez was carrying out his second tour of duty in Iraq and left behind a wife and child. \nSurvivors include his mother\, Judy Nez of Birdsprings\, Ariz. \nOn Tuesday\, Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley issued a proclamation in honor and in recognition of Sgt.
